When you think of something that you would really like to do, but are scared to do, what does that thought pattern sound like?

Here's an example that resonates with many people.

"I would really like to find a career that is more fulfilling."

I invite you to genuinely consider that statement, if it fits for you. Take a few minutes to imagine really trying that on. What comes up?

Because of our tendency to feel safe in the familiar, it's hard to think past the discomfort of change. The conversation you have with yourself might sound like this:

I'd really like to find a career that's more fulfilling...

...but then I'd have to learn something entirely new.

...but then I would have to meet a whole new group of people.

...but then I would have to move to a new part of town/city/province.

...but then I would lose my seniority.

...but then I might take a pay cut.

...but then I might have to alter my schedule.

What if instead, you tried countering that "but then" with a "then what"? And not just once, but apply it multiple times to the same "but then" statement, like this:

...then I would pour myself into learning something that actually inspires me.

Then what?

...then I would eventually become adept at the new skill I was learning.

Then what?

...then I would feel start to feel comfortable in my new job.

Then what?

...then I would actually start being successful in a job I enjoy doing.

Then what?

...then I would experience financial success, and likely gain back or exceed the rate of pay that I am currently at.

Then what?

...then I can begin to set my own schedule in terms of availability for work.

Each scare tactic that we try with ourselves can be consciously considered, and countered. Now, does the new thing still feel scary? Probably. But does it also feel achievable, now that you know you can come up with solutions and answers?

We can do a lot of work here in so many different avenues of life. This is a great way to explore fear, hesitation, and create confidence in yourself to come up with solutions.

Life has an unending supply of doors to try.
Life has an unending supply of doors to try.
